Faculty & Students Demonstrate to Protect Jobs at NADC
Layoffs @ Nashville Auto Diesel College Draw Hundreds to Protest
Hundreds of faculty, students, and East Nashville residents rallied in front of the Nashville Auto Diesel College on Gallatin Road to bring attention to unfair layoffs and working conditions during the holiday season.
"Two long-time instructors were laid off right around Christmas time," said Doug Collier, president of SEIU Local 205, which represents the faculty at NADC. "And as we stand here today, we've heard that possibly two more will be laid off by year's end. One of the people being laid off is one of only two African-American instructors at the college - a man who has put in over 20 years of service to students at NADC. Another instructor was laid off while he struggles with personal health issues. These are loyal, qualified instructors who have the respect and admiration of faculty and students and it is outrageous that these folks are being let go around Christmas time while the college continues to make profits."
Workers are asking to begin direct talks with Lincoln Education Systems, the for-profit corporation that owns NADC and dozens of other technical colleges across the country, to discuss this and other issues that are not being handled appropriately by the local management team at NADC.
